Chapter 12: The Principalâs Office
After lunch, Isaiah, Craig and Everett left the cafeteria and started walking in the direction of their next classes. Everett made a remark about how Antenor, T-Bone and Farouk were tracking down those who were questioning the election results. Everett did not sound disturbed when he said so, and Isaiah found that disturbing. While they were walking something else grabbed all of their attention. A very loud chant was coming from the principalâs office. The principalâs office was usually as quiet as the library. Everett held the door open for Isaiah and Craig as they got ready to satisfy their curiosity.
âShut it down! Shut it down! Shut it down!â Every football player and cheerleader in the school was there, shouting it in unison. Isaiah, Craig and Everett joined a handful of other members of the Out Crowd coming in to catch a peek of what was going on. A few of them actually joined in with the In Crowd.
Principal Terrenceâs secretaries stood up to greet the mob at first. Soon, however, they were overwhelmed and returned to sitting at their desks, their eyes wide as marbles, exchanging looks with one another. Principal Terrence himself was nowhere to be found.
Isaiah looked around. âOkay, whatâs going on here?â
âWhatâs going on is that our latest story seems to have rubbed some people the wrong way.â Tyler Base walked up and stood beside Isaiah, appearing quite pleased with himself.
âIs it true?â Everett asked Tyler, sounding somewhat skeptical. âDid they really rig the Class Clown election by giving lollipops to the eighth graders, or is this just another one of your gossip columns?â
âOh, itâs not just gossip this time,â said Tyler. âWeâve got mountains of evidence for it. Listen to how the In Crowd is desperately trying to sweep this one under the rug. This is going to be priceless.â
âWhat do you mean?â Craig asked him.
âLet me put it to you this way. Nobody will be doing them any favors simply to sit with them at lunch anymore. Theyâre finished.â
Hallie continued to lead the chants from just in front of the secretariesâ desks. âShut it down! Shut it down!â she continued to lead as much of the portion of the student body gathered there repeated after their leader. âResist toxicity!â shouted Hallie.
âResist toxicity!â the rest of the In Crowd repeated.
âShut down the Gates Sentinel!â yelled Hallie.
âShut down the Gates Sentinel!â echoed the rest.
âWhatâs going on guys?â Karen had just entered the room herself. She turned off her cell phone and put it in her backpack. Everything in front of her now had her full attention.
âChaos,â said Everett.
âTotal chaos,â Craig concurred.
Finally, Principal Terrence opened the door to his office and emerged into the entranceway. âAlright, Iâm coming out,â he said, exasperated, as the noise filling up the whole room gradually simmered down. âHello, all you students who have come to my office with no appointment to yell really loudly. What can I do for you?â
Tyler Base was ready. âMr. Terrence,â he spoke up before anyone else could and approached the principal with a clipboard in hand.
